What’ social work?

Social and Welfare work means to help the people to tackle their day to day problems. The basic goal of Social work is to prevent or at least alleviate the social problems in the society like social injustice, unemployment, psychiatric counselling, child welfare, destitution, etc.. which have damaging effects. Its about providing support to individuals through removal of barriers amongst the individuals, groups & communities.

Misconceptions of Social Work

1. Professional social workers are not people like that of an alm-giving society or a charitable body. Its about putting sustained efforts to regenerate self confidence & self dependency of individuals.

2. Most of today’s social concerned people put in – Voluntary physical service (Shramdan) which is only an effort to help the society. Its not actual social work, since it only caters to completion of a task while in social work, the process is put in place to solve the problems. Here the basic aim is to find out an “adjust-mental solution”.

3. Social work is solving problems scientifically, psychologically with emotional content.

4. Political workers are not social workers, because they are neither trained in social work profession nor use social work methodology in practice.

Personality requirements.

To become a good social worker, one needs to have these qualities.

Career in Nursing

Nurse Career

Nurse Career Referred to as backbone of Healthcare services, Nurses have come along way to be regarded at par with doctors. They both complement each other with respect to patient care and one can’t imagine one without the other. It is almost impossible to imagine health care delivery without Nurses.

A Nurse Career would plan and provide nursing & medical care to patients at home, hospital or other settings, who are suffering from both acute physical or mental ill health or chronic disorders. Nursing can be said as the art of caring for sick people with the science of health care. The largest group of workers in the healthcare division are Nursing assistants & Nurses.

Florence Nightingale, an English Nurse, is considered as the founder of Modern Nursing.

Nurse Career Job Profile

A Nurse would have multiple tasks at hand at a time,. Hence, it can be said that her duties are quite manifold. Their duties and tasks cover responsibilities and functions, which would further depend upon the working environment, department assigned, and the level of experience that one carries.

At the initial stage, A Nurse would be assigned the work of bedside care for the patients. While at the senior stage, A Nurse may be given a tougher and more complex job such as Pediatric, Intensive care patients, Psychiatric etc., which would require specialized skills.They handle responsibilities include administration duties, operating of medical equipment, Keeping records of patients progress, and other daily routine tasks.

A Nurse, often times, is at a risk of getting infected by infectious diseases too.

A Nurse’s task would be

· Skilled & qualified Nurses easily find work, since they constitute the largest group of employees in Hospitals. They find work in nursing homes, orphanages, industries, armed forces, sanatorium, Govt.-run hospitals, Private -run hospitals, etc.

· They also get employed in NGOs and other non-profit and charitable organisations. They also get employed in Govt. sector organisations such as Indian Nursing council, Red Cross society, State Nursing Councils, and other nursing institutions.

· Nurses may also find employment in Teaching as well as Administrative nursing and medical schools.

· There are other employment opportunities such as opening their own nursing institute after getting much experience.

· Nurses are in demand ­everywhere, from hospitals and clinics to various colleges. After doing a BSc in nursing, one can work in the clinical side or as a teacher at the various schools and colleges of nursing.

How Do I get there?

· Anyone aspiring to be a Nurse, Can take up the Auxiliary Nurse Midwife / Health worker course. One can join this course after completing their 10th. The duration of this course is 1.5 years.

· There is another course, namely, General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM). This can be be opted after completing 12th science stream with Physics, chemistry & biology combination, having an aggregate of 40%. The duration of this particular course is three & half years.

· Then there is a Bachelor in Science Nursing. The eligibility criteria for this course is passing 12th Science stream with physics, chemistry & biology, having an aggregate of 45%. The duration for this course is three years and the candidate needs to be of minimum 17 years of age.
